Mini Countryman, the trendy crossover

In this most recent version, BMW blends the charm of a Mini model and the attributes of a Sports Activity Vehicle, thus opening the door to a clientele in search of elegance, space and flexibility. “A picture is worth a thousand words” : Confucius knew what he was talking about…

For the first time in its history, the Mini offers four doors and a rear that opens up to provide generous space. While passenger comfort is a prime concern, “go-kart” sensations to which the brand’s addicts have become accustomed have been preserved thanks to the Mini ALL4 all-wheel drive system, available as an option. The designer has enlarged the dimensions of the bodywork, raised ground clearance and window surfaces, reduced the chassis frame overhang and heightened the belt line while simultaneously reinterpreting the characteristics of the trendiest car on the market : roof line, hexagonal radiator grille, hefty wheel arches, large headlights integrated into the hood… Everything in this new design, definitely its strongest point, evokes the robust personality of this latest offering.

Primarily focusing on a single product, the Mini is experimenting with diversification with audacity and talent. After revamping the model, proposed with a wide range of engines, introducing convertible and station wagon versions, it has dared to make major changes. And in so doing, it has opted for the very popular segment of the crossover. Moreover, the Nissan Juke, its main competitor, is in its line of sight. As it has no intention of playing on an attractive price, the battle will be fought on the field of style, the prerogative of the BMW Mini. The compact approach of an urban car paired with the highly-prized advantages of an off-road vehicle, and the challenge is won hands down. 1.79 m wide and 4.10 m long, the Countryman is both bigger and unquestionably more virile. As demonstrated by the impressive bulging wheel arches and wings, re-dimensioned for the occasion. The weight of the car thus jumps to 180 kg, 250 kg if one opts for the 4WD.

Inside the car, the aviator style reigns supreme. While arguable - “not quite up to a prestige vehicle” regret some observers -, the dashboard, characterized by sprightly concave design, gives priority to details. The model’s main quality, however, is indisputably the space now available, its practicality and modularity, especially at the rear, which has never been the strong point of this appealing English car. A five-seater version is even proposed among the options, available at no extra cost. The capacity of the trunk has also benefitted from this development. As is usual for the Mini, the range of colours and accessories is very wide and well-inspired. The buyer has a choice of three petrol engines - Cooper S, Cooper and One - and two diesels - Cooper D and One D -, ranging from 90 to 184 hp. If one had to find fault with the Countryman, it would be its price - pretty high according to some observers - starting at 26,960 €.
