Located in the western area of the Municipality of Odivelas, Famões borders Ramada, Odivelas, Pontinha, Caneças and the Municipality of Sintra.
With an area of 4.58 km2, it is at an average altitude of over 100 metres, with the highest point marked by the Casal do Bispo geodesic marker at 289 metres. This allows it to have some of the most beautiful panoramas in the Municipality. According to 2011 census data, it has 11,095 inhabitants.
Its landscapes also show, despite urban and industrial changes, an agricultural unity formed by small quintas, casais and enclosed fields.
It has a high number of neighbourhoods. Its territory is almost entirely situated in a mountainous area with large wooded spaces.
Also marked by enormous craters, this landscape reflects the importance of the Trigache quarries, whose activity is described in the Memórias Paroquiais of 1758. It was from these quarries that the stone for the reconstruction of the city of Lisbon came following the earthquake of 1755.
